The Data Lab board appoints RDS team member

Duncan Buchanan, Head of Health Data Transformation at Research Data Scotland, is one of 20 new appointments to join The Data Lab’s boards.

As part of the University of Edinburgh, The Data Lab supports businesses, professionals and students to apply the latest developments in data science and AI in the real world.

The new appointments sit across The Data Lab’s Governance, Innovation, and Education Advisory Boards. Duncan Buchanan joins the Innovation Advisory Board, which includes a blend of representatives heavily involved in data and AI research and innovation and has a remit to provide strategic direction for The Data Lab’s innovation activities and approve investment in projects activity.

In addition, the Governance Board’s responsibilities include setting the strategic direction, compliance and finance for the innovation centre, while the Education Advisory Board seeks to identify and understand the needs of local industry in terms of skills and education requirements and provide strategic direction in scaling The Data Lab’s education portfolio.

Duncan Buchanan said, "Through our work at Research Data Scotland, it’s clear that there’s significant interest across the data science landscape in developing the untapped potential of public sector data. I’m looking forward to working with my fellow Board members to support The Data Lab to continue to widen its impact through some fantastic collaborations with academia and industry."

On appointing the members, Les Bayne, Chair of The Data Lab, said, “The experience our new board members will bring to The Data Lab will be immeasurable. The 20 new non-executive advisors will bring a wealth of relevant and exceptional experience”.

CEO of The Data Lab, Brian Hills, said, “The newly appointed board members bring an exceptional range of skills and perspectives across industry, academia and the public sector as we continue in our vision to create the world’s most impactful data and AI community”.
