Led by: University of Edinburgh
Funding awarded: £5,000
Generation Scotland is Scotland’s largest family health and wellbeing longitudinal study, looking to improve the health and wellbeing of current and future generations in Scotland. They created resources to engage members of the public at science festivals and other large-scale events.
The activities at these events link to Generation Scotland’s longitudinal study, encouraging members of the public to sign up and get involved. Using games, crafts and 3D models the team covered different types of data in research and how research looking at people over time can be uniquely powerful. The activities allowed people to get creative whilst discovering the impact research can have on health and wellbeing and how people can be a part of research to shape the future.
Generation Scotland actively reach out to diverse audience groups with a focus on underrepresented groups including young people, LGBTQIA communities and those in rural Scotland. Throughout the project they visited Glasgow Science Festival, Edinburgh Science Festival, University of Edinburgh Doors Open Day and the Royal Highland show, sharing their work with diverse audiences across Scotland.
Hundreds of people visited the stalls and attended virtual sessions. Participants reported afterwards they had they a better understanding of health research and the importance of joining.
Find out more about the project in this video, recorded as part of the RDS Public Engagement Fund showcase in February 2024.
The Generation Scotland team also were able to understand the barriers people have to participating in the studies, and work to reduce those. Work will continue beyond the project with the activities featuring at future events.
