About RDS

RDS is a relatively new charity that was set up by the Scottish public sector and leading universities. We help researchers find and make use of data that can improve the lives of people in Scotland. Working in partnership, we do this by widening the range of data available, creating new data assets and providing a single point of contact for safe, secure and effective access to public sector data in a trustworthy manner.

Data is often locked away in lots of individual systems, across many different organisations, and isn’t in a format that makes access or integration easy. We can help researchers to unlock the potential of this data by giving them information and advice that speeds up and simplifies their work.

RDS aims to provide a step change in the service to researchers, whilst maintaining the high standards of information governance and data security already in place. We aim to work as openly as possible, maintaining standards in transparency and ethics. Our focus is on providing a streamlined service for researchers, as well as extending the range of data available through the service, particularly in the areas of Covid-19, NHS imaging, geospatial data, children and justice services.

Our partners include: Scottish Government, Public Health Scotland, National Records of Scotland (NRS), and the Universities of Aberdeen, Dundee, Edinburgh and Glasgow. We work closely with the national and regional safe havens. And we are in contact with other organisations in Scotland and across the UK in the data research sector, including public sector, research and commercial bodies.

About ADR Scotland

From April 2023, Research Data Scotland will be commissioned by Scottish Government to support the delivery of the ADR Scotland programme on practical data work.

The ADR Scotland programme is led in partnership by the Scottish Government and Scottish Centre for Administrative Data Research. ADR Scotland is one of four national partnerships that make up Administrative Data Research UK (ADR UK), alongside Office for National Statistics, funded by the Economic and Social Sciences Research Council (part of UK Research and Innovation). Together they are transforming how public sector data is curated, accessed, and linked to facilitate impactful research that enriches the evidence base for policy to systematically improve the lives of the people of Scotland.

About the Job

RDS is almost a year old and is at an exciting stage in establishing our data sourcing and curation functions and becoming a key partner in delivery of the ADR Scotland programme.

We’re looking to recruit a Data Sourcing Manager to lead on areas of non-health data, as part of the Administrative Data Research Scotland programme. This will involve building trusted relationships with data controllers and strategically developing our approach to assessing feasibility of new datasets for ingest. Therefore, collaboration and engagement of stakeholders is a key feature of the role.

About the Team and Ways of Working

The data team at RDS is made up of a team of experienced data analysts with experience across the UK data landscape. As a new organisation, we’re establishing our ways of working including our processes and managing collaboration. This is an organisation where you will work in a highly competent and knowledgeable team to forge new ways of getting important data to researchers securely and at scale. This role will suit someone who works well in environments where there is a degree of uncertainty, where priorities may change and new processes need to be created.

About You

You are a self-starter, with high energy. You are very organised and have proven data analysis experience, preferably in the public sector or academia. You are passionate about how data driven innovation can transform services and improve wellbeing and have good knowledge of/experience in working with data and data platforms.

The Package

We invest in the development of our people and promote an inclusive workplace culture. We are based at the Bayes Centre in the centre of Edinburgh. We generally work a 35-hour week but offer hybrid working and part-time and/or flexible working hours from day one. We also offer 33 days’ holiday, including public holidays, but we don’t have set closures; and a generous pension. This list will be added to, and you’ll help shape it.
